Strategy 2024-

In short, Mimeta is a Norwegian organization working on cultural rights, which means safeguarding artistic expressions and people’s free access to arts production. We do this by supporting intermediary organizations, those who work on behalf of the practitioners, in the media and in arts, globally.

The vision of Mimeta is to that people should be given their right to free creative expressions, created on free terms, and presented by independent institutions. Our mission is to support and protect those who want to enhance societies by aesthetic or intellectual means. By both our vision and mission Mimeta highlight the impact these practitioners have on developing more open societies, including the culture itself. This is summarized in our slogan:

Give people their right to free creative expressions

On the strategic level Mimeta is achieving results by supporting organizations and individuals who work on behalf of the arts and media, to improve the sectors´ position on rights issues, in political and legal matters, on professionalism and skills, the distribution of the free expression and - in the end - the sustainability of the sector.

Thus, Mimeta works with partners that address these issues on behalf of their sectors. At the same time, we see that changes cannot be achieved, unless the need for change is understood, embraced, and advocated for by a community wider than the practitioners themselves, turning the stories into a widely adopted narrative for change. Storytelling is in this context also a tool for change. In this way, we work both for the universal rights that belong to the practitioners, and we see their free expressions as a prerequisite for making change in societies.

Our established area of intervention is:

  1. Support for culture sector development based on the artistic rights.

  2. In 2022 Mimeta included a new line of intervention:
Support for developing narratives for social change.

However, there are issues and initiatives emerging that Mimeta has legitimacy to include in its work programme. We also anticipate that there are financial resources that will be available for Mimeta if we get involved in these initiatives and at the same time open ourselves up for new funding partners, both nationally and internationally.

Arts as part of Freedom of Expression
From this we have decided on three strategic initiatives under the umbrella of Arts as part Freedom of Expression:

  1. Involve Mimeta in the funding of a more sustainable professional sector for the support of artists at risk.

  2. Make Mimeta into a platform for engaging national arts systems in the support of artistic rights issues globally.

  3. Establish Mimeta as a facilitator of meeting points and initiatives with local arts and culture organizations that are interested in global networking and programming.
